Finding the right fabrics for sewing

Sewing is probably one of the oldest and most popular types of home crafts out there. It has been used by people of so many generations when it comes to the things at home.

Aside from the design or the tools needed, what makes sewing successful is the type of fabric that will be used. Seasoned sewers would agree that knowing the right kind of fabric to be used for a specific project is very important to ensure that one will get the expected outcome. Since knowing the right fabric for sewing is crucial, it is a must that you have the knowledge about its different kinds.

Which fabric is for which

Choosing fabrics for sewing is probably one of the hardest tasks for beginners because this can be overwhelming. Imagine, you have to choose specific types out of the seemingly endless kinds available in the market.

To avoid being confused and spend so much money in buying the wrong kind of fabric, take time to research on different types available in the market for you to identify which is the ideal for the sewing project you have in mind. During your research, you will learn that these kinds are based on the fiber content of the fabric. Fiber content refers to the components of the fabric that will make it suitable for a specific use.

Once research has been conducted, you can now proceed in listing down the types you will need for your project. Among the so many sources of fiber contents out there, the natural fiber fabrics are most preferred for clothing because these are made from materials that are inherent in nature. Examples of which include coats from animals, cocoons of silkworms, and stems, leaves, and seeds of various plants. Aside from all-natural, this type is also considered "hypoallergenic."

In the market, the most common type of fiber preferred for garments is cotton because of its strength, neat appearance, durability, and easiness to work on. Cotton is also a top choice because it comes in so many colors, weights, weaves, patterns, and wider price range. There are different types of cotton fabrics depending on your preference include lawn, gauze, duck, flannel, muslin, gingham, matelasse, organdy, moire, pique, pima, poplin, plisse, swiss, seersucker, velveteen, and terry cloth.

Other popular types of natural fiber fabrics include linen, hemp, ramie, wool and rayon. Specialty hair fibers usually used for home crafts such as sewing include man-made fiber fabrics, acetate and triacetate, acrylic, nylon, olefin, polyester, spandex, leathers and suedes, synthetic suedes, vinyls, and furs.
