Understanding Home and Herbal Remedies

There are home and herbal remedies available for people who fear the side effects from conventional over-the-counter and prescription medicine. Popping pill after pill can really bog you down and having a safer alternative is better. Most sensible people understand that these things are not about cures, but about easing the process of healing. Herbs have been used for medicinal purposes for over 5000 years, and there is no reason to doubt their effectiveness.

What is an herb?

An herb is a seed-producing plant that does not grow woody tissue like that of a shrub or a tree. Their essential oils come from their leaves, unlike spice which contains them in other parts like the bark, branches, and roots. Common examples of herbs include catnip, chamomile, hyssop, spearmint, thyme, and so on. A lot of them have been used for culinary purposes, giving dishes more flavor and body, but they can be used for medicinal purposes.

Preparation

Some herbs are used fresh, while others are either dried or cured to preserve them over the course of time. These processes can either enhance the herb itself or make them usable. Herbs, like spices, are processed so that people can make the most out of their special properties. Once processed, which is meant to be as minimal as possible, they are shipped for distribution.

Classification

Different herbs have different effects. Astringents are a category of herbs that stop the flow of blood and other fluids. Alkalinizers are made to raise pH levels within the body, while acidifiers do the opposite. Tonics are those that can replenish one's strength and refresh his body and mind. Diuretics are commonly used to induce secretion, mainly urination. Diaphoretics are like diuretics, but they are more for sweating. Laxatives are some of the most well known herbs around as they are used by many to promote bowel movement, which is the remedy constipation. Nervines are made to affect the nervous system, whether it excites or relaxes nerves. An herb can have more than one of these effects and the study of herbs is there to distinguish between these effects and what herbs have that make them special.

Usage

These herbs can be used in a whole variety of ways. They can be used as seasoning and additional flavoring for food, which make them invaluable for the kitchen, and perhaps for sick people as well. Aside from that, they can be used with a cup of hot water or such to make tea as an infusion. Some can be used for tinctures or even through direct oral consumption.
